One of our AYKF Certified Teacher's, Kathleen Charles, who has completed our full training and is now teaching classes of her own, has done a wondeful job in passing on yoga to her own children.

Here Kathleen recoounts the event that took not only her by surprise, but Brisbane as well......

I RECENTLY BECAME A CHILDREN’S YOGA INSTRUCTOR, STUDYING WITH DANI AT ANGEL YOGA. I HAVE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED SHARING THE NOURISHING PRACTICE OF YOGA WITH MY OWN CHILDREN AND AM THRILLED TO NOW HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE IT WITH CHILDREN IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY.  WHEN MY OLDEST SON CAME TO ME WITH THE IDEA TO RAISE MONEY TO SAVE THE GREAT BARRIER REEF, MY HEART SWELLED WITH PRIDE AND ADMIRATION. THIS IS YOGA!  THIS IS WHAT OUR TEACHING’S ARE ALL ABOUT (KARMA YOGA PERSONIFIED!)—CARING FOR EACH OTHER AND THE WORLD WE LIVE IN, TREATING OUR WORLD WITH RESPECT AND LOVE, AND BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES.  MY LITTLE 6-YEAR-OLD ACCOMPLISHED ALL THIS THROUGH HIS SIMPLE, BEAUTIFUL IDEA TO HOLD A “TREAT STAND” OUTSIDE OUR HOUSE TO HELP SAVE THE REEF AND THE RESPONSE HE RECEIVED COULDN’T HAVE BEEN MORE BEAUTIFUL.  IT TRULY SHOWED THAT OUR WORLD IS A WONDERFUL PLACE.  HERE IS HIS STORY:

WE RECENTLY TOLD OUR BOYS THAT WE WOULD VISIT THE GREAT BARRIER REEF DURING THE NEXT SCHOOL HOLIDAYS, OUR ENTHUSIASTIC 1ST GRADER BEGAN RESEARCHING IT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.  WHILE CONDUCTING THIS RESEARCH, HE DISCOVERED THAT THE REEF IS IN DANGER DUE TO POLLUTION, OVER TOURISM AND CLIMATE CHANGE.  “I DECIDED I SHOULD RAISE MONEY TO HELP SAVE IT,” HE SAID.

DREW DECIDED THAT HE WOULD HAVE A “TREAT STAND” OUTSIDE OUR HOUSE ONE MORNING TO RAISE MONEY TO SAVE THE REEF.  WITH THE HELP OF FRIENDS, WE LOOKED FOR AN ORGANIZATION TO DONATE THE MONEY TO AND DECIDED ON THE AUSTRALIAN MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY’S (AMCS) SAVE THE REEF CAMPAIGN.

WE HELPED HIM WRITE LETTERS ASKING LOCAL STORES FOR DONATIONS OF SUPPLIES AND TWO OF THEM AGREED TO SUPPORT HIS EFFORTS. OBOYS FRUIT AND VEGETABLE SHOP DONATED POTATOES AND CARROTS FOR HIM TO SELL AND ONE OF THEIR EMPLOYEES PROVIDED HER SPECIAL HOMEMADE “BLISS BALLS” TO SELL.  WOOLWORTHS, THE LOCAL GROCERY STORE DONATED A GIFT CARD TO HELP PURCHASE PAPER CUPS AND JUICE.

NEXT WE CONTACTED THE AMCS TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT DREW WAS DOING AND THEY PROVIDED BOOKMARKS, STICKERS AND OTHER INFORMATION FOR HIM TO HAND OUT. WE ALSO CONTACTED THE LOCAL PAPER, HOPING TO GET THE FUNDRAISER LISTED IN THE WEEKLY LOCAL EVENTS SECTION.

INSTEAD, THE NORTHWEST NEWS INTERVIEWED DREW AND RAN AN ARTICLE DETAILING HIS EFFORTS. THEN SOCIAL MEDIA TOOK OVER!  THE AMCS FEATURED THE ARTICLE ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE, AS DID A PARTNER ORGANIZATION, FIGHT FOR THE REEF. A LOCAL AM RADIO SHOW, 4BC DRIVE, CALLED TO INTERVIEW DREW LIVE ON THE AIR AND THEN FEATURED THE STORY ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE.

WHEN I HEARD THIS HAD HAPPENED, I VISITED THE PAGES TO SEE FOR MYSELF.  WHAT I SAW ON THEM, MADE ME CRY WITH JOY.  PERFECT STRANGERS WERE SHARING THE STORY AND COMMENTING---PRAISING MY LITTLE BOY AND THE EFFORT MADE BY A CHILD TO MAKE OUR WORLD A BETTER PLACE. PEOPLE WERE SAYING THEY WERE GOING TO COME BY AND SUPPORT HIM AND ENCOURAGED OTHERS TO DO THE SAME.  WE WERE THRILLED, BUT ALSO NERVOUS---OUR LITTLE TREAT STAND SEEMED LIKE IT NEEDED TO GROW A BIT! ;)

THE FRIDAY BEFORE THE FUNDRAISER, DREW SPOKE ABOUT THE EVENT AT HIS SCHOOL ASSEMBLY AND ALL OF HIS CLASSMATES MADE SAVE THE REEF POSTERS—WE HAD 22 TO BRING HOME TO HANG UP AROUND OUR CORNER. FRIENDS VOLUNTEERED TO HELP SELL TREATS AND SEVERAL FAMILIES OFFERED HOMEMADE BAKED GOODS TO SELL AS WELL, INCLUDING HOMEMADE LEMONADE.

ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT THE CORNER NEXT TO OUR HOUSE WAS CROWDED WITH SUPPORTERS AND FRIENDS FOR CLOSE TO TWO HOURS. “WE RAISED $455!,” DREW PROUDLY SHARED IN A FOLLOWUP RADIO INTERVIEW CONDUCTED THE NEXT DAY.

EVERYONE INVOLVED SAW THE EVENT AS A WONDERFUL WAY TO BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO NOT ONLY SUPPORT A GREAT CAUSE, BUT ALSO TO SUPPORT CHILDREN ACTIVELY WORKING TO CREATE A BETTER WORLD. AGAIN, PERFECT STRANGERS WERE COMPLIMENTING HIM AND ALL OF THE CHILDREN INVOLVED, TELLING US THEY’D DRIVEN DISTANCES OF UP TO 20KMS, BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT WHAT HE WAS DOING WAS SO WORTHY AND THEY WANTED HIM TO KNOW THEY SUPPORTED HIM.  SOME OF THEM EVEN HAD THEIR PHOTOS TAKEN WITH HIM!

SINCE THE FUNDRAISER, DREW HAS WORKED WITH HIS SCHOOL TO HOLD A “FREE DRESS DAY.” INSTEAD OF WEARING THEIR SCHOOL UNIFORM, IF STUDENTS MAKE A GOLD COIN DONATION, THEY WILL BE FREE TO DRESS IN BLUE THAT DAY TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR PROTECTING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF. “I HOPE THIS WILL HELP US RAISE MORE MONEY TO SAVE THE REEF,” SAYS DREW. “IT IS ONE OF THE SEVEN NATURAL WONDERS OF THE WHOLE WORLD AND HOME TO OVER 1,500 SPECIES OF FISH! IT IS IMPORTANT TO PROTECT IT.”

THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN JUST GORGEOUS AND UPLIFTING TO ALL OF US INVOLVED. AGAIN, THIS IS KARMA YOGA—COMING TOGETHER IN A HAPPY, HOMEMADE WAY TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER AND BETTER OUR WORLD.  IF I EVER BEGIN TO WORRY ABOUT THE STATE OF OUR WORLD, ALL I NEED TO DO IS BRING UP THAT PICTURE OF MY SON AND HIS FRIENDS FOCUSED AND WORKING TOGETHER TO HELP MAKE IT BETTER, AND I CAN REST EASY, KNOWING THAT, IN OUR CHILDREN’S HANDS, OUR WORLD IS SAFE.

Yoga is so much more than breathing, stretching, exercises etc: it is an opportunity to change our world. It creates a deep respect and consciouness for our environment and eveery living sentinent being. Teaching Yoga to Chidlren carries a rewarding opportunity to develop the conciousness of our young people teaching them to build a better world.

AYK commenced in 1999 growing into a renown yoga school facilitating yoga into schools, early childhood centres other yoga  studios, our own yoga studios and many other sporting and professional organisations working with children.

By 2004 Dani had developed a Teacher Training program to prepare and entce other yoga teachers to teach children. Over the years we intoduced yoga for the whole family and incorporated this into our training.

In 2012 the programe was developed to meet new industry standards by Yoga Australia. Post Gradute Certificate course in Childrens Yoga.

I am thrilled to announce we have submitted our course to Yoga Australia and 'Angel Yoga 4 Kids & Families' is now a registered, certified Post Gradute Yoga Course.

OUr next intake is in Brisbane 7 February 2015, 4 month part time course. On completion you will be a AYKCT (Angel Yoga 4 Kids Certified Teacher). You also have the option to go on with study and become a RCYT (Registered Childrens Yoga Teacher) with Yoga Australia.

A THOUGHT FOR THE NEW YEAR

There’s a trick to the Graceful Exit. It begins with the vision to recognize when a job, a life stage, a relationship is over — and to let go. It means leaving what’s over without denying its validity or its past importance in our lives.

“It involves a sense of future, a belief that every exit line is an entry, that we are moving on rather than out.”

OM GUM GANAPATAYEI NAMAHA

START THE NEW YEAR OFF WITH THIS MANTRA.

Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha
Om Guhm Guh-nuh-puh-tuh-yea
Nah-mah-hah
—Om and salutations to Ganapati (Ganesha) The new year offers a chance to bring your deepest desires to life. But first you have to find a path around the obstacles standing in the way. Although they may manifest as external problems—you may think a lack of time prevents you from meditation every day, for example—it is often emotions or thought patterns that hold you back. Yet if your internal state is unified with your desire you can achieve anything. The mantra above is traditionally chanted to start new endeavors with positive energy and to remove obstacles.

thank you Kelly for your amazing work. You have been very loved by adult students, parents and kids and you will be missed. We wish you every success in your studies and future and look forward to the day you can afford time to teach yoga again.

Thank you for your kind words

Dani, I am so lucky to have been under your guidance during such a difficult time with my health and family and, at a time where I felt there was very little opportunity for me to be successful and effective in my work. I admire your work and value greatly the time, energy and effort that you have contributed to my world. Your teaching will stay with me.

Thankyou so very much.

Love, Kelly. Xx

Just Listen

“I suspect that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention. And especially if it's given from the heart. When people are talking, there's no need to do anything but receive them. Just take them in. Listen to what they're saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than understanding it. Most of us don't value ourselves or our love enough to know this. It has taken me along time to believe in the power of simple saying, "I'm so sorry," when someone is in pain. And meaning it.

One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often interrupted to tell her that they once had something just like that happen to them. Subtly her pain became a story about themselves. Eventually she stopped talking to most people. It was just too lonely. We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care. Many people with cancer can talk about the relief of having someone just listen.

I have even learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the tissues, until I realized that passing a person a tissue may be just another way to shut them down, to take them out of their experience of sadness and grief. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there with them.

This simple thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very young. I thought people listened only because they were too timid to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well intentioned words.”
